Three pots of pasta and cheese sauce beside a plain can, a phone with chat bubbles, and a plate of chicken nuggets

My wife asked if I could help with dinner. I knew what that meant.

"Can you help with dinner tonight?"

If you're married, you already know that is not a question. That is wife speak for "I need you to make dinner tonight." And she does not ask unless she really does not have it in her, so I said yes without hesitation. Because I'm a good husband. I would like that on the record.

My first move is always the same: look for leftovers. There are never leftovers on the nights I cook. I do not know how this works, but it is as reliable as gravity. Last night was no exception. No leftovers, and no thawed meat either. So I went digging in the pantry and found a couple of cans of chicken and a fresh bag of penne. Not exactly a cooking show opener, but it was something.

So I did what any self-respecting home cook does now. I snapped a picture and sent it to ChatGPT. "I need a recipe for this canned chicken." Chat knows me pretty well at this point. It knows I need quick, simple, and easy, not a weekend project. It came back with cheesy chicken and rice. Which would have been great, except I was literally staring at a leftover pot of rice, and I knew my wife did not want rice. Yet again. So I asked if we could swap in the penne, and I was off and running.

Halfway through, I realized I had no chicken broth. No bouillon either. The recipe was very confident I did. What I did have was adobo seasoning, so we worked with what we had. That is most of dinner, honestly.

Here's the thing about me in a kitchen. If the instructions are written to a T, I'm golden. Temperature, timing, how often to stir, give me all of it. I was locked in. I had a pot of penne going for us, a pot of mac and cheese going for the kids, and the cheese sauce in my right hand, stirring like my life depended on it. Three pots. One dad. No sous chef, unless you count the phone.

Then the kids informed me they "didn't like this brand of mac and cheese." Of course. I rolled my eyes so hard I nearly saw my own brain, then threw some chicken nuggets in the toaster oven. The nugget is the unsung hero of every weeknight in our house.

Our pasta, for the record, was good. It did the job. Tasty and filling. My one note to myself: more salt. You can always use a bit more salt than you think. Unless you're a professional chef, there's always room for improvement, and I'm pretty comfortable living in that room.

The weird part came later. You know how asparagus makes your pee smell? Apparently canned chicken does too. Nobody warned me. ChatGPT definitely did not put that in the instructions. So consider this your warning, and consider it my contribution to science. Nobody went hungry, my wife got a night off, and nobody had to eat rice again. I'm calling that a win.
