We moved the whole house to the basement for nothing

My daughter turned 7 this weekend, and she wanted a Barbie party. At home. In October.
We have a small yard. Small enough that "outdoor party" is more of a hope than a plan. And all week the forecast was looking cold. The kind of cold where you start picturing eleven kids, a Barbie cake, and your living room all in the same small space.
So we did what any reasonable parents would do. We panicked early.
We emptied the playroom. Then we kept going. Anything that wasn't a table or a chair got carried downstairs. Toys, bins, the random stuff that lives in the corner because nobody knows where else it goes. All of it, into the basement.
I'm afraid to go down there now. I'm pretty sure it's one box away from becoming a game of Jenga.
And then the day came, and the weather was perfect. Sunny, comfortable, honestly beautiful. We had the whole thing outside.
The basement is still full. I think we live there now.
The party ran 11:30 to 1:30, drop-offs encouraged. That's not lazy, that's strategy. Two hours is the sweet spot. Long enough to feel like a party, short enough that nobody melts down. Including me.
The most chaotic moment wasn't the kids. It was the turnaround between food and cake. Plates, napkins, half-eaten pizza, juice boxes with one sip left in them. We had about three trash bags going at once, and I was walking through the yard holding one in one hand and balancing a Barbie cake in the other, trying to get it to the table before anyone noticed it was coming.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but don't carry trash and cake at the same time. I did not drop the cake. That's the only reason this is a funny story.
If you're thinking about doing a party at home, here's what I learned.
Prep, prep, prep. Then prep again. There is nothing worse than realizing you're out of plates while eleven kids are staring at you. Get the food, the supplies, and the trash bags lined up the day before, so the day of is just showing up.
Have it early in the day. This one's my favorite. The countdown to a birthday party is torture for a kid. An 11:30 start makes the waiting part go quicker. And it gives everyone the rest of the day to decompress. Most importantly, the cake sugar high has plenty of time to wear off before bedtime.
All the prep, the moving, the trash bag juggling, the basement I'm scared of, it was all worth it for one moment.
When everyone started singing, I got to see her face. That was the whole party for me.
Happy 7th, kiddo. Dad's going to go clean out the basement now. Eventually.
